Affiliate Marketing in Russia: Market Size and Affiliate Networks

While I do have a list of Eastern European affiliate networks here, many things have changed in the past two years (with many more than five affiliate networks available now in Russia), and it’s time for an updated (and dedicated) post on Russian affiliate networks and the overall state of affiliate marketing in Russia.

Size of the Market

Here is some interesting data on the size of the Russian affiliate industry (per AdLabsanalysts’ estimates and forecast, as quoted by a CPA Club Russian Facebook groupmember):
The current RUB to USD exchange rate may be found here. Today it is 0.032, and it has been fairly steady for some time. Hence, in Russia the affiliate marketing industry has grown from some 2.4 million USD in 2003 to 65.6 million USD in 2012 [see how it compares to other countries here].

Russian Affiliate Networks

Here is my list (in alphabetical order):
  • 1Lead.ru
  • ActionAds
  • ActionPay
  • Ad1.ru
  • AdmitAd
  • Advaction
  • Afrek
  • Apelsin
  • Babki-online
  • CityAds.ru
  • CPANetwork.ru
  • CPartner.ru
  • DirectProfit
  • GdeSlon.ru (heavy datafeed focus)
  • Hey Moose (targeting women)
  • HIMBA
  • Lead100.ru
  • LeadGid (acquired Djumbo.ru in 2012)
  • Leads.su
  • LeadsLeader (financial)
  • Leadster
  • MasterTarget
  • MixMarket
  • Motiv8.ru
  • Myragon
  • Pay4Results.eu
  • QX Plus
  • SellTarget
  • TopAdvert
  • TradeDoubler
  • TradeTracker
  • Unilead
If an affiliate network has been omitted, let me know (via the “Comments” function), and, upon checking it out personally, I’ll add it to the above list.

Is the role of the affiliate network changing?

Anyone working in affiliate marketing will tell you it’s a complex channel. Typically the day to day grind of an affiliate network is to try and make sense of this complexity, juggling priorities and conflicting interests, resolutely performing the role of middleman and arbiter.
Yet as the industry matures and grows in both value and influence, is the role of the affiliate network changing?
Rollback five years and an affiliate network’s role was seemingly pretty straightforward. As long as the tracking worked, links were easy to access and commissions were paid on time, that would suffice. Of course those fundamentals remain as important today (certainly from an affiliate point of view) but the general shift towards performance based marketing has resulted in affiliate networks taking on extra roles and responsibilities.
First and foremost, affiliate networks have become significantly more accountable. Long gone are the days when some networks would actually act as a barrier to communication between affiliate and advertiser. Similarly brand monitoring tools are frequently offered as standard additions to any affiliate programmes ensuring advertisers are happy with how their brand is being represented by a whole host of different affiliates.
Evolving that point, different affiliates offer different promotional methods and in doing so the question often returns to one of value. What is the value of an advertiser’s traffic from a voucher site versus an affiliate’s supporting long tail paid search campaign or presence on a cashback site?
Affiliate marketing has always been online in microcosm and with the prevailing wider industry discussions about multi attribution and the longer term viability of rewarding on last click, so affiliate networks are able to provide insights from the variety of online traffic they record.
One function of an affiliate network that isn’t always considered is how it can act as an easy access platform for publishers looking to tap into hundreds of advertisers at once. Networks are often approached by publishers and technology companies who don’t have the time or resource to build individual relationships with advertisers en masse.
As long as the publisher is willing to work to a CPA then networks can offer a shortcut to major brands. And as the ‘try it and see’ attitude that CPA offers prevails so advertisers are increasingly amenable to increasingly diverse opportunities.
Any discussion of the role of networks wouldn’t be complete without referencing how agencies are increasingly competing for a slice of the affiliate pie. Many agencies now have dedicated affiliate teams and may choose to run some of their affiliate activity via their own white label platforms taking market share from networks. In a sense this competition is nothing new; some major brands like Amazon have always chosen to bypass networks. But as agencies beef up on their affiliate knowledge so networks will sharpen their focus.
Clearly, agencies have one distinct advantage over networks in that they may also handle additional media offering the potential of a clearer view of how affiliate marketing fits within an advertiser’s overall mix. There will however, always be a role for excellent specialists and networks have the benefit of their own proprietary tools and technology, both time consuming and expensive to develop.
Most networks will have preferred agencies they work with and where the relationship flourishes is when there is a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities. Some of the most successful agencies working within affiliate marketing are also specialist affiliate agencies tapping into the burgeoning mid-tier SME market and thus have a natural affinity with affiliate networks.
The role of networks in a crowded marketplace is actually clearly defined in an area that didn’t exist until a couple of years ago, that of self-regulation. The codes of conduct that have emerged from the Affiliate Marketing Councilover the past two years (taking on a heightened importance with extension of the ASA remit into other areas of digital) have shown a mature and collaborative approach from most of the major affiliate networks in the UK and also defined a crucial and pivotal role in further professionalising the industry. Only networks have the clout and collective will to ensure the work of the Council is enforced.
As the industry becomes more crowded so affiliate networks will need to evolve offering a combination of the easiest and most accessible affiliate tools and strong consultancy to their key clients. Those networks that maintain a focus on strong customer support and a deeper understanding of the industry are likely to be those who stand the test of time.

Internet Affiliate Network Marketing

There are systems today that claim it will be easy to make money in network marketing if you just do XYZ.  Wise marketers have learned that you can make more money faster by not worrying about whatnetwork marketing business they belong to and focus on the affiliate products that surround the niche.  To unlock the door to a small fortune requires some prep work.
We live in the age of systems
There seems to be a system for everything and that is true for network marketing.  While using a good system of marketing will go a long way in building your business it really is a small piece of a much bigger puzzle. What usually isn’t told to you in mostNetwork Marketing systems is that it is only one little part of the equation, see systems gets a person in the door, but it is up to you to figure out how to close that person into your business.
It is my humble opinion that systems that do not have specific programs locked into them are a waste of time and money, but before you start thinking I am just trash talking consider this. There are systems online right now that for a small fee will allow you to plug what ever programs you want inside.  In theory this is a great idea but in application using these types of systems it will be very hard to build your network marketing business.  People that use these systems can generate income from them , but not likely to build their network marketing business.
Think about it, why would someone join your business if they can just plug theirs in instead?  If you want to see your internet network marketing business grow, it is going to require extra work on your part aside from using a “system”.
We know at the heart of selling is relationship building, this is true offline and online.  Just because you got someone in your autoresponder does not mean they are in yours alone. There are thousands of other reps online competing for the same person. In order to stand ahead of the crowd you are going to have show your subscriber that you have something more to offer them in terms ofcustomer service.
The Dividing Line
While I will be the first to say systems are great, without having a foundation to build on using any system won’t much matter. If you are serious about doing business online you will have to invest in hosting and an autoresponder system. Without these two tools you don’t have a business.
Doesn’t matter if you are just an affiliate marketer or a network marketer you are going to have to use these tools. You can’t avoid it, and if you do you surely aren’t going to make much money online.  The 2 most valuable assets you can have for your business is “Your List” and “Your Virtual Real Estate.”
Luckily both of these tools usually have good affiliate programs attached to them –>Meaning you can get paid!
Simple Internet Network Marketing Flow Chart!
network marketing
It really is as easy as that chart says it is. More often than not we complicate matters for ourselves.  Add your personality to the equation and you will have a successful business.  Like every thing in life the more you learn the better your results will be.

Affiliate Network Review: EWA Private Network

Every now and then, a product, service or program comes along that really needs to be reviewed and promoted – not because it’s a paid review or affiliated site, but because it’s just outstanding.  Even though this is a paid review, that’s definitely the case with EWA Private Network.  EWA, which stands for Eagle Web Assets, is an affiliate network that has built a solid online reputation through ethical business practices, proving they really know what they’re doing, and taking great care of their affiliates and their advertisers.
EWA is made up of a small, hand-selected group of marketers, media buyers, SEM pros, and email marketers.  The company is run by Ryan Eagle and Harrison Gevirtz, who lead a team of dedicated Network and Affiliate Managers 7 days a week to provide the kind of support not often found in an affiliate network.  It is clear that their focus is on their affiliates and helping them to be successful in their affiliate marketing efforts.  They promise to maintain personal connections with all their affiliates and work closely with each affiliate every step of the way to ensure success, and they have a reputation of backing up that promise.
If you’ve been an affiliate marketer or have researched the possibilities, you’ve most likely either experienced or read about issues with affiliates of various networks not being paid on time, as much as promised, or not at all.  Not only does EWA pay out weekly, they pledge to beat any payout for the same program, and they pay everyone – on time.  They truly understand that taking care of the people who count on them (affiliates and advertisers) pays off for them in big ways, which is reflected in their motto: Help more; Pay more; Get more.
Highlights:
  • EWA will beat any payout you get from any network.
  • They pay weekly – from day 1, with no threshold.
  • They are available 7 days a week to help you make your campaigns bigger and more profitable.
  • They help you scale and optimize your campaigns and find traffic sources.
  • EWA pledges to get any offer you are currently running at another network within 3 days and beat the payout!
  • They have over 1500 offers for 60 countries on their network live and active.
So is there a downside to EWA?  Well, not really a downside, but it is a private network.  That means the only way in is usually through a referral.  However there is an application on the site, and even though having a referral will help, if you meet their criteria, you can be accepted without it.  For anyone who is accepted into their network, their “pickiness” is a very positive thing.  They really want to work with serious marketers because they plan on investing in your success through one-on-one training and support.

Understanding the Role of the Affiliate Network – By Matt Swan

A key strength of an affiliate network has traditionally been that it provides access to a large publisher base. By utilizing their technology, the network is able to foster relationships between publishers and advertisers.
With a significant number of publishers on a network, it is not feasible to expect each of them to be a suitable brand fit for all programs. A mature affiliate program can grow to thousands of publishers, yet only a fraction will actually make a sale – some may not even actively promote the brand. In addition, there are likely to be several suitable publishers on the network that are not currently signed up to an advertiser’s program.
With the channel becoming more sophisticated, the challenge for networks is that advertisers are not necessarily looking for quantity in publishers; rather, they are searching for quality. The network should provide a platform allowing the two parties to build these relationships.
Some advertisers are beginning to question why they can’t just establish direct relationships with their key publishers running the majority of their programs in house, while letting the network handle the longtail. Networks should respond to this challenge by showing how they are continuously indentifying and recruiting new, high quality, publishers to advertisers’ programs.
Advertisers need to be confident that if a publisher has a network account, the network has done the necessary background and compliance checks and is confident that the publisher is suitable to join the programs.
As the performance channel comes under greater scrutiny from advertisers, networks are required to put significant resource behind managing large-scale publisher relationships. Rather than sitting back and watching sales accumulate from the usual top performers, the focus is on identifying publishers that will contribute to future growth.
With a significant volume of publishers on the network, there is considerable potential that remains untapped. Networks should provide a marketplace which allows advertisers and publishers to connect, and showcase their offering. This concept will facilitate communication between the two parties for mutually beneficial results.
However, the networks role is not simply limited to facilitating the relationships between its advertisers and publishers. It is important for the network to provide insight and expertise into the channel and provide leadership on issues that affect the industry. Changes in US affiliate tax laws are an example that has the potential to affect what happens within the channel.
Networks are also instrumental in raising the profile of the industry to the wider online marketing community. With access to a considerable amount of data, networks are able to provide compelling insights – from what is happening in mobile commerce through to looking at a typical customer journey through the channel. This data helps to structure performance marketing strategy and is invaluable.
In the future, the network’s role will evolve further. As well as facilitating and maintaining relationships, data insights will play a more significant role. In depth analysis will allow advertisers to ensure they are partnered with the most suitable publishers to promote their offering.
